How-To: Password Protect Your Entire WordPress Blog
by Omni on May.20, 2009, under How-To Guides
If you have always wanted to have a blog, but have been frightened that somebody who shouldn’t read it may read it, have no fear. There are always ways to protect your content. Sure, you can always use the .htaccess file to password protect the entire blog directory, but that looks ugly. You can also password protect individual posts, but then you have to do that for each one, and also your titles are not hidden. The most effective way to protect your blog would be to just allow access to only registered users, and then disable user registration (so that you have sole control of who reads your blog). You can do this without even installing a plugin, but by simply making a small tweak of one of your theme files. Keep reading for the guide.

How-To: Convert Almost Any Media File Without Software
by Omni on May.13, 2009, under How-To Guides, Useful Sites
There are so many different types of file formats that it becomes extremely difficult to keep track of all of them. Most of the time, your computer can’t even play certain files that you may have downloaded and wish to open. The biggest culprits of this are audio and video files. They come in all these random file formats where finding a player software for them can be extremely difficult, and so your only remaining option is to use some sort of converter to convert the file to a more popular format.
However, the problem with that is that if it is such a random file format, finding a converter can be difficult in itself. Furthermore, once you do find that program, it most likely is a trial and you have to install it on your system, then convert, then uninstall. All this is a hassle and a pain, especially for one measely file conversion. That’s where online file converters come in. Keep reading for the low-down on one of the most comprehensive online file converters.
How-To: Find Reviews of That Sketchy Online Store
by Omni on May.12, 2009, under How-To Guides, Useful Sites
The internet is a very large place, and there are multitudes of online stores that sell things. Whether it’s just some generic sketchy .com online business or if it’s a store that’s selling an item you want through Amazon.com, it’s your duty to know whether or not that company is reputable. There are so many instances and cases where online stores are actually scams, and they just run away with your credit card info (since it’s so easy to set up a website without any sort of licensing). Other times, the service from said store are so atrocious that you wish it were a scam, because it seems like you’re never going to receive your package anyway.
You may think that you’re one step ahead of the game and head over to Google to search about the company before you purchase something from some random site, but often times that search is inconclusive. If the company name is some generic word, your search will be flooded with inapplicable results. Or, on the contrary, the company is so obscure that a search returns virtually no useful results. However, there is a way that has tons of reviews of a great deal of online stores, both sketchy and well-established. Keep reading for the info.
How-To: Delete/Edit Unwanted T9 Texting Words
by Omni on May.06, 2009, under How-To Guides
If you have a cell phone and find yourself texting often, you may have picked up on the phone’s special typing mode called “T9 Predictive Text”, where you basically hit each key once for each letter and it will automatically figure out what word you are trying to spell. It is also convenient in the fact that if a word that you are trying to spell isn’t found in the dictionary, you can switch to regular text input and type it in yourself, and it will automatically be added to the T9 word database.
However, this benefit is a double-edged sword. If you enter a mistyped word by mistake, or even if you type in some number by mistake, phones often set that number combination as the first entry in your T9 dictionary, and so it shows up every time you try to type anything with that key combination. Examples of this include having “86″ showing up instead of “to” or “47″ for “is”. This can become extremely annoying as you have to scroll through the other options to switch the word to the right one, as it can confuse your receiving party tremendously. You may have tried to find a way to delete your custom T9 dictionary, or even to edit the words found in it, but 99.9% of phones out there on the market today have no such capability. However, if you have this problem, there is a solution that works for ALL phones (even though it can be very tedious). Keep reading for the guide.

How-To: Forward Gmail to Your Cell Phone as Texts
by Omni on Apr.22, 2009, under How-To Guides
If you’re one of the few lucky enough to have an unlimited texting plan, and also find yourself constantly checking your Gmail account to see if you have any new messages, (but unlucky enough not to have a smartphone / data plan), you may be in luck. With a little bit of tweaking, you can set up your Gmail account to forward all the emails (or even only specific emails) to your cell phone as text messages. You no longer have to keep checking if you have a new message on a computer because you’ll be notified instantly straight to your phone!
To do this, you need a Gmail account and a texting capable phone. (There are also some restrictions on what service providers support this, but that’s later on. It can also be done without unlimited texting, but having unlimited texting is a great benefit — just so you don’t have to ever look at a $26,000 phone bill. I also can’t vouch for international users, but this should work in USA.) Keep reading for the step-by-step guide on how to set up your Gmail account to receive your emails on your phone.
How To: Make a DVD Out of an AVI File
by Omni on Apr.21, 2009, under How-To Guides, Useful Programs
If you’ve been reading some of our previous posts (primarily the ones on BitTorrent), or even if you have a digital video recorder, you may have noticed that getting the files onto a DVD for easy DVD player playback is much harder that it seems. Almost 99 out of a 100 times, your DVD player won’t be able to just play a video file if you just drag/drop and burn whatever video file to a DVD. When you do that, you are usually burning a data DVD, which is specially meant for only PCs to read them; DVD players usually can’t.
However, if you ever have wanted to create your own DVD, whether it was a home video or just some other collection of video clips you’ve had, there is a way to do it. What you want to do is author the DVD. When you use DVD authoring programs, you have the ability to set not only the video to play on a DVD player, but also to create aspects of the DVD such as the menu screen, scene selections, and more. There are many programs that can do this for you, the best being free. Keep reading for the list and a quick guide on how to use the best one.
