How-To: Share Your Computer’s Media Files with Your PS3

Now with the prices of PlayStation 3’s dropping, more and more people are buying them. It not only is the most powerful gaming platform (from a hardware point of view) on the current market, but it also has the added benefit of being able to serve content in 1080p resolution, making the most out of that HDTV you just bought. It is also one of the best Blu-Ray players that you can get. However, did you know that you can stream virtually any media (video, audio, images) that you have on your PC to your PS3 over your home network? AVI, DIVX, MP3, JPG — you name it, you can most likely stream it.
If you have your PS3 on your network and want to share your files to it to watch on your TV, have no fear. It’s beyond easy; just keep reading for the guide.
- Ensure that your computer and PS3 are on the same network. (If you know they are, go to the next step.) To do this, go to command prompt (Start->All Programs->Accessories->Command Prompt) and type in “ipconfig” and hit enter. You’ll see a number for “IP Address” that’s probably four sets of numbers separated by periods (like 192.168.10.1). Then, go to your PS3 (make sure you’re connected to the internet), and go to Network Settings and look at your network information. It will list an IP address here too. Compare this number with your computers IP address and make sure the first 3 numbers are equivalent. For example, if your PC is 192.168.10.1, your PS3 could be 192.168.10.2.
Download and install PS3 Media Server. Run this program. (Ensure that your PS3 is on so that the program can find your PS3 on the network.)- On your PS3, go to any of the media channels and hit “Search for Media Server”. After a few seconds of searching, it should find the PS3 Media Server. Select it and you should be able to see all of your hard drives. You can now navigate to where ever you have media files saved, and most likely can play them back. I’ve been enjoying all the movies and TV shows I have on my computer on my HDTV rather than my computer’s monitor, and it works perfectly!
