How-To: Forward Gmail to Your Cell Phone as Texts
by Omni on Apr.22, 2009, under How-To Guides
If you’re one of the few lucky enough to have an unlimited texting plan, and also find yourself constantly checking your Gmail account to see if you have any new messages, (but unlucky enough not to have a smartphone / data plan), you may be in luck. With a little bit of tweaking, you can set up your Gmail account to forward all the emails (or even only specific emails) to your cell phone as text messages. You no longer have to keep checking if you have a new message on a computer because you’ll be notified instantly straight to your phone!
To do this, you need a Gmail account and a texting capable phone. (There are also some restrictions on what service providers support this, but that’s later on. It can also be done without unlimited texting, but having unlimited texting is a great benefit — just so you don’t have to ever look at a $26,000 phone bill. I also can’t vouch for international users, but this should work in USA.) Keep reading for the step-by-step guide on how to set up your Gmail account to receive your emails on your phone.
Log into Gmail and at the top right, go to the Settings page. Here, go to the “Forwarding and Pop/IMAP” tab.- Under forwarding, select the option to forward your emails and for the email address, enter your phone number @ the appropriate service provider (see the list below).
- That’s it! Try sending yourself an email and see if you get it as a text. You can always disable it by going back to that menu and selecting “Disable Forwarding”. (If you want to set it so that only specific emails get forwarded, you have to set a “Filter” to forward them; check the Filters tab in Settings.)
This can be done with any email provider that allows forwarding and any cell phone service that provides an email SMS gateway. Check below to see the list of the most popular email to phone addresses. Simply replace “10digitphonenumber” with whatever your phone number is (including area code). So, an example would be: 2125551234@vtext.com
- Verizon: 10digitphonenumber@vtext.com
- AT&T: 10digitphonenumber@txt.att.net
- Sprint: 10digitphonenumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
- T-Mobile: 10digitphonenumber@tmomail.net
- Nextel: 10digitphonenumber@messaging.nextel.com
- Virgin Mobile: 10digitphonenumber@vmobl.com
- Alltel: 10digitphonenumber@message.alltel.com
- Boost Mobile: 10digitphonenumber@myboostmobile.com
